Help Us Find a Cure for Type 1 Diabetes
People who have diabetes are unable to produce or properly use insulin. Without the ability to produce insulin, diabetics cannot metabolize glucose, which fuels the body. People who have type 1 diabetes are unable to produce insulin because their immune systems have mistakenly destroyed the insulin-producing beta cells in the islets of the pancreas.
Type 1 diabetes requires insulin delivery via injection or insulin pump, lifestyle adjustments, and careful monitoring of blood glucose levels. The disease is difficult to manage and carries the constant threat of devastating complications, including kidney disease and premature death.
Now, thanks to vigorous research efforts supported by the Focus to Cure Diabetes Foundation, there is an exciting new treatment option at the University of Virginia for some patients with type 1 diabetes who have problems controlling their blood sugar through diet and daily insulin injections.
